Cotswold Weekly News Update for 07/02/08
News from the Front Got back from the 2008 JoeCon earlier this week - had a BLAST. For a change, I actually got to participate in some of the convention's activities this year, and I'm glad I did. Four others and myself formed a team to compete in this year's G.I. Don't Know - a "Family Fued" style gameshow whereby we were tested on our knowledge (or lack of knowledge) on G.I. Joe, from 1964 all the way to 2008. We walked in, expecting nothing but a good time, but all walked out with first place medals. Needless to say I was stoked (and a bit shocked). Anyhoo, back to what's happening in 1:6th land. While I was in Hong Kong a few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet up with Tao's Army sales rep to review what new was on their horizon for them. Many of you have already seen their M32 Grenade Launcher (which has been selling like hotcakes I might add). In addition to that, they were nice enough to provide me with a sales sample of the next M4 Carbine that they're developing. What differentiates this weapon from others in the market is the scopes, bipods, and other attachable items all slide onto the weapon's rail system as opposed to push into pre-drilled holes. This is a nice change since I was always busy filling those unused holes with putty when working on my guns. We should know more on the release of this piece (as well as its price) in the coming weeks. Until then, we have these images to drool over.
Well, after the positive response to their CIA SAD Night Ops figure, it looks like Soldier Story is back into modern with their ODA Assault Team Leader. The set comes with their all new S2 body, which has a slender design and is ultra posable; however, the set also comes with a "fake belly" to make our operator a little out of shape (hello, he's Special Forces...). He is attired in the Army's ACU pattern fatigues and is geared with the Battlelab Plate Carrier and Cummerbund (plus all the pouches and gear that hooks onto it). You'll have to check out the website, though, to see all that comes with him - not enough space here. Click HERE for more info. We had a blast from the past when we heard that Three Zero (yes, Three Zero) would be releasing the much anticipated Bertie the Pipebot. Who's Bertie the Pipebot, some of you may ask? Well, he's the brainchild of famed comic artist Ashley Wood from his "Zombies vs Robots" comic book series and his upcoming "World War Robots" series. The figure stands 14 inches tall and comes in two versions - Desert and Dirty Deeds. The Desert set comes with a robot in tan paint scheme (extremely weathered, I might add), an anti-tank weapon, a chest rig, some grenades, and a pistol that would make Hellboy duck. The Dirty Deeds version comes with a robot in black weathered paint scheme, black rig, huge revolver pistol, grenades plus a machete to take off those zombie heads (also included, in a mesh bag). These things are so off the wall that we had to carry them! Click HERE for more info.
Other Figure News Sideshow's Han Solo: Tatooine Smuggler will be showing up the next week or so. In the first released Star Wars film (A New Hope), Solo appears as a largely self-concerned spice smuggler who only reluctantly and somewhat accidentally becomes involved in the rebel movement against the evil Galactic Empire. Over the course of this film and its sequels (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi), Solo becomes a chief figure in the Rebel Alliance. Star Wars creator George Lucas describes him as "a loner who realizes the importance of being part of a group and helping for the common good." Click HERE for more info. Dragon's Arthur Barnes is due here any day. Arthur depicts a British soldier within 9 Commando during the Italian campaign of 1944. Commandos were the predecessor to today's Special Forces, operating in secrecy behind enemy lines, employing unconventional and irregular tactics to assault and disorient the enemy. As WWII progressed commandos operated increasingly in the role of shock troops, sometimes up to brigade strength and sometimes in conjunction with infantry. Click HERE for more info
