Cotswold Weekly News Update for 07/09/08

    News from the Front

While on the boards,  I noticed a few people grumbling about the higher than expected cost for Sideshow's upcoming 12" Snake Eyes figure from their G.I. Joe: Real American Hero line.  Well, I came across the following video from Sideshow that shows all what comes with the set, and one will soon see that the set is easily worth the price.  It comes with a TON of stuff.  Anyhoo, here 's a link to the video so you can see for yourself:

    Action Man News

Just received word that Wave 12 Action Man has shipped to us from overseas and we expect to see them later this month.  Keep your fingers crossed that Customs doesn't go goo goo over it hold up the delivery process.

Speaking of Wave 12, I just added all six (yes six) of the Sportsman/Footballer Carded Uniform sets.  Now you can outfit your Action Man footballer in either the blue jersey (white shorts, blue/white striped jersey (white shorts), green jersey (white shorts), orange jersey (black shorts), red/white striped jersey (black shorts), or white jersey (black shorts).  Pretty soon, you'll have an entire team on your shelf!

    New Products Announced

A lot of people were bummed when ACE Workshop's first DEVGRU set was released a few years ago and sold out so quickly (I was fortunate enough to score one - killer).  Good news is that they are releasing a 2008 edition here in the next month, now with their new figure body.  They've made a few changes - the Warlord Chest Rig is now tan (was OD), his cap has been replaced by a helmet (Protec), he has body armor (a plate carrier), and he comes with an all new M4 Carbine model.  He still comes outfitted in the desert tiger stripe fatigues, which is a big plus to me (been needing some desert tigers for a while).

Last week, I talked about the Tao's Army M4 SIR Carbines in the NEWS FROM THE FRONT editorial. Well, I'm happy to say that I have them listed on our website.  I have even better news that we will be offering the weapon in two color schemes - tan and olive drab.  To rehash, this weapon is different from other M4 releases in that the scopes, bipods, and other attachable items all slide onto the weapon's rail system as opposed to push into pre-drilled holes.  This is a nice change since I was always busy filling those unused holes with putty when working on my guns.  Expect to see these by month's end.

This weekend, I received info on two new setsd from DC Direct's line of 1:6 scale action figures - Supergirl and SinestroSupergirl was Superman's cousin, and first appeared in comics in the late 50's. Kara Zor-El, the most iconic version of Supergirl, dons her classic blue costume as she joins the popular line of 1:6 scale deluxe collector figures! In addition to her intricate and authentically detailed outfit, Kara comes with several accessories, as well as her feline companion, Streaky the Supercat!  Expect to see Supergirl in February 2009.

Sinestro is the former mentor and arch-nemesis of the superhero Green Lantern Hal Jordan. Sinestro first appeared in Green Lantern in 1961 has battled him on and off for the past 40+ years.  The 1:6 scale deluxe collector figure of Green Lantern's number one enemy is dressed in his new, intricately designed and authentically detailed fabric costume and also carries a yellow lantern power battery to charge his fear-fueled yellow power ring! Packaged in a deluxe 4-color window box with a fifth panel, this 14" tall figure also comes with extra sets of hands and a display stand. Expect to see Sinestro in February 2009 as well.

Also new from DC Direct are The Comedian and Dr. Manhattan from the film adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' twelve-issue Hugo Award winning comic book limited series Watchmen. Set in 1985, the film follows a group of former vigilantes as war begins to break out between the United States and the Soviet Union. Like his previous film 300, Snyder (the director) closely modeled his storyboards on the comic.  The 1:6 scale renditions of these two famous characters are to be based on their cinematic counterparts, but we won't know for sure what Dr. Manhattan will look like until later this month (kudos to DC for that gem).

    Other Figure News

Hot Toys' Rocky Balboa, Italian Stallion is due to hit in two  weeks.  Based on the famous boxer as he appeared in the movie "Rocky III", each set features Hot Toys' fully articulated 12-inch muscular style body (with an uncanny resemblance to Sylvester Stallone) outfitted in yellow shorts, socks, and robe, with championship belt, boxing shoes and gloves added for further realism. This would be a great addition to your 12" Rocky or Sylvester Stalling figure collection.

Hot Toy's second release under their Icon M line, Marlon Brando, is slated to arrive in the next couple of weeks.  Brando was an Academy Award-winning American actor whose body of work spanned over half a century. Early in his career, he was best known for his roles in the 1950's films A Streetcar Named Desire and The Wild One. In the Wild One (of which this Hot Toys figure is based on) Brando portrayed biker gang leader Johnny Strabler, a juvenile delinquent, who dressed in a leather jacket and rode a 1950 Triumph Thunderbird 6T motorcycle. Hot Toys' rendition of the famous actor comes clad in leather-like black jacket, T-shirt, jeans and boots.

Soldier Story's CIA SAD Night Ops comes out this week.  SAD is short for Special Activities Division, which is special division within the CIA that is responsible for covert paramilitary operations.  In the case with this figure, his mission takes place "after hours", thus all the cool night ops gear.  The figure is dressed from head to toe in all black clothing and gear and even wears a balaclava with a white skull face for intimidation purposes (this mask actually exists in real life - I checked).  The set is further enhanced with an all black Eagle CIRAS style body armor and a Blackhawk CQC style drop down pistol holster (complete with silenced pistol.

Soldier Story's Chinese People's Volunteer Army is also scheduled to arrive this week.  The figure is based on the Chinese army deployed  during the Korean War. Although most soldiers were previously members of the People's Liberation Army, the PVA was separately constituted in order to prevent an official war with the U.S. Soldier Story's rendition is a pretty well spot on recreation of what a Chinese soldier would have looked like during the 1950's, from the padded parka and pants, to the Ppsh-41 sub-machine gun with banana clip.  Hopefully, they will also release a Korean War US Army or US Marine figure to compliment this set.

ZC Girl's Kelly, Cyber Killer will be here by week's end.  Still dunno how she got such a title - nothing really futuristic about her - other than the rifle case worth of "goodies" she has. Set includes red rooted hair female figure with new "EVE" body, white blouse that ties up in the front, black leather shorts, black leather leggings/boots, black leather gauntlets, and black leather hat. Is armed with double pistol shoulder holster with pistols, belt with shotgun shells and sheath with knife in the back, armband with shotgun shells, leg sheath with knife, and shotgun. All the weapons can be carried in the plastic rifle case with foam on the interior.

In celebration of 7 years of business, Toy Soldier is releasing this summer a 1970's era USMC Force Recon Rifleman/Navy Corpsman Figure set.  I've always liked the fact that Toy Soldier gives you more gear than you need for one figure. In this case, you can deck your figure to either be a USMC Rifleman or a US Navy Corpsman.  You just have to add a few more pieces and you have a complete uniform (and gear) setup for two figures.  Expect these to pop up in the next couple of days, but don't wait too long.  Pre-sales have been strong for this set, so he won't be here for long.

Hot Toys' new USAF Airman Security set should be arriving next week.  As some of you already know, the US military have been making the transition from the standard woodland and desert camouflage patterns to the more modernized digital camouflage patterns (USMC with MARPAT and US Army with ACU). Well the Air Force is next in line with the debut of their ABU (Airman Battle Uniform), which is a blending of the Tiger Stripe Pattern and the Army's ACU pattern.  Anyhoo, Hot Toys outfitted this set with this new pattern uniform and it looks pretty cool.  Tons of other goodies come with this set as well (check the website for details).

We received some good news and bad news from Amok Time Toys about their Classic Battlestar Galactica figure sets.  The good news is that they have all new pictures out on their Cylon Centurion and Cylon Commander - you can see their weapons and backsides more clearly now.  The bad news is that the Cylon's release date has been pushed back to September 2008.  This, in turn, will have a ripple effect with the other figures' release dates (Tigh, Apollo, Athena, Lucifer, Cain), pushing them as far back as January 2009.  We'll keep you all posted.
